1. It's south of Extown.

哈里斯一家要外出度假，来旅行社租房子。
Francis: Yes, Mr Harris. You want a small house near the sea.
Mr Harris: That's right.
Tracy: Iwant to go to Amerrica. Or Africa …
Mrs Harris: We're having a holiday in England, Tracy.
Francis: And there's a very nice house for you, near Highcliff. Look at the map. Now, Where is it? Er, Highcliff …
Mrs Harris: It's south of Extown.
Francis: Ah, there is it. South of Extown, it's south of Extown. It's 4 kilometres south Extown. It's between Extown and Worchester. And it's a new house. Look! Here's the front door. No, sorry, it's the back door. This is the front door. Here's the living room.
Mr Harris: Where?
Francis: Here. And the kitchen is here at the back. And you go through the back door into the garden.
Mr Harris: So, this is the living room at the front. And the kitchen is here at the back. And you go through the back door, into the garden. And what's that room between the kitchen and living room?
Francis: That's a toilet. And the bedrooms are upstairs and the bathroom's upstairs, too.
Mr Harris: Let's take it, Elsie! We'll take it.
Francis: Good. You need the keys for the house. Mr Jones will give you the keys.
Mr Harris: Mr Jones?
Francis: He's got the keys. He'll meet you and give you the keys.

弗朗西斯：是，哈里斯先生。你要一所靠近海边的小房子。

哈里斯夫人：它在爱克斯堂南边。
弗朗西斯：呵，在这儿！爱克斯堂南边。是在爱克斯堂南边。在爱克斯堂南边四公里处。在爱克斯堂与华彻斯特之间。还是所新房子呢！瞧！这是前门。不，对不起，是后门。这是前门。这儿是起居室。
哈里斯先生：哪儿？
弗朗西斯：这儿。厨房在后面，在这里。穿过后门就到了花园里。
哈里斯先生：这么说，这是起居室，在前面，厨房这儿，在后面。走出后门，就进了花园。那么，厨房和起居室中间的那间是什么？
弗朗西斯：那是厕所。卧室在楼上，浴室也在楼上。
哈里斯先生：咱们就要它吧，埃耳西！我们要它。
弗朗西斯：好。你们需要这房子的钥匙。琼斯先生会给你们钥匙的。
哈里斯先生：琼斯先生？
弗朗西斯：他拿着钥匙。他会来找你们并把钥匙交给你们的。

注1. to have a holiday 意思是度假，与 to go on holiday （风第十六课）同义，但用法不同。如：我去青岛度假，可说：I am having a holiday in Qinbdao. 或说：I am going on holiday in Qingdao.
注2. 看地图时，习惯以 north，south，east，west来表示位置。

说某地在某地之（南）：… is ( south ) of … ；说某地在某地之南若干公里处：… is ( how many ) kilometres ( south ) of … ；说某地在某地的（南）部：… is in the ( south ) of … 。例：
Brighton is south of London.（布莱顿在伦敦以南。）
It's in the south of England.（它在英格兰的南部。）
It's 85 kilometres south of London.（它在伦敦以南约八十五公里处。）
Cambridge is north of London.（剑桥在伦敦以北。）
It's 95 kilometres north of London.（它在伦敦以北九十五公里处。）
Newmarket is east of Cambridge. （ 纽马克特在剑桥以东。）
Sardinia is a small village in the south.（沙迪尼亚是南部的一个小村庄。）
注3. through （穿过），into（进入），这是两个表示动作方向的介词。如：
We went through Tiananmen into the Palace Museum.（我们穿过天安门进入故宫博物馆。）
注4. at the front （在……的前部），in front（在……的前面）。如：
There's a living room at the front of the house.（这所房子的前部是一间起居室。）
There's a big tree in front of the house.（房前有一棵大树。）
I'll wait in front of the reception desk near the door.（我在大门附近的接待柜台前等候。）
Let's neet in front of the Royal Hotel at three o'clock.（我们三点钟在皇家饭店前面碰头吧。）

2. Under the table, on the floor, in the cupboard, behind the door.

琼斯先生领着哈里斯一家来到了海边的新房子。

Mr Jones: Follow me, this way, through here.
Mr Harris: Well, Mr Jones, we don't need any keys.
Mr Jones: Ah, Mr Harris, this is a new house.
Mrs Harris: Without a front door?
Mr Jones: Don't worry. Mrs Harris! The door will be here today. My brotheris bringing it. He'll be here in a moment.
Tracy: What's in here?
Mrs Harris: It's the living room.
Mr Harris: Oh, dear! There aren't any chairs!
Mr Jones: There will be a table and chaies here in a moment. Mr Harris.
Mrs Harris: Your brother's bringing them.
Jones: That's right. Now.
Tracy: I'm going upstairs.
Mr Jones: Be careful, please!
Tracy: I'll be all right.
Mr Jones: I hope so.
Mr Harris: This is the toilet. It's between the kitchen and the living room.
Mr Jones: There you are! A wonderful new kitchen.
Mr Harris: It's very small.
MrJones: Some people prepfer small kitdhens.
Mrs Harris: I don't. Mr Jones.
Mr Jones: There's a cooker. And there's a refrigerator.
Mr Harris: Where?
Mr Jones: Behind you. The refrigerator is behind you.
Mrs Harris: I can't open it!
Mr Harris: I can put the table outside. Then you can open the refrigerator.
Mrs Harris: But I neet the table in here! What's that under the table? On the floor?
Mr Jones: It's a box.
Mrs Harris: What's inside the box?
Mr Jones: Spoons, knives, forks.
Mr Harris: Plates.
Mrs Harris: Cups. Where will we put these things?
Mr Harris: On the floor. Put them back under the table. Put them here on the floor.
Mr Jones: Put them in the cupboard. There's a cupboard behind the door. Under the table, on the floor, in the cupboard, behind the door.
Mrs Harris: Where's Tracy gone?
Mr Jones: You daughter. Mrs Harris? She's upstairs.
Mr Harris: What's happening?
Mr Harris: Tracy! What are you doing up there?
Tracy: I'm coming down. Ahhh …
Mr Jones: Well, it's a new house.

琼斯先生：跟我来，这儿走，从这里穿过去。
哈里斯先生：啊，琼斯先生，我们用不着钥匙嘛。
琼斯先生：啊，哈里斯先生，这是所新房子。
哈里斯夫人：没有前门？
琼斯先生：别着急，哈里斯夫人！门今天就会有的，我弟弟会把门送来的，他马上就到。
特累西：这里是什么？
哈里斯夫人：那是起居室。
哈里斯先生：喔，天哪！边椅子都没有！
琼斯先生：马上就会有桌子和椅子的，哈里斯先生。
哈里斯夫人：您弟弟就会拿来的。
琼斯先生：对，现在，……
特累西：我上楼去。
琼斯先生：请加小心！
特累西：没事儿。
琼斯先生：但愿如此。
哈里斯先生：这是厕所，在厨房和起居室之间。
琼斯先生：瞧！这个厨房可好啦。
哈里斯先生：这可很小啊。
琼斯先生：有人喜欢小厨房。
哈里斯夫人：我可不喜欢，琼斯先生。
琼斯先生：那是炉子，那儿是冰箱。
哈里斯先生：哪儿？
琼斯先生：在您身后。冰箱在您身后。
哈里斯夫人：我打不开！
哈里斯先生：我可以把桌子放在外面，这样你就能打开冰箱了。
哈里斯夫人：可是我这里需要这张桌子！桌子下面那是什么？地板上？
琼斯先生：是个盒子。
哈里斯夫人：盒子里面是什么？
琼斯先生：勺子，刀子，叉子。
哈里斯先生：盘子。
哈里斯夫人：杯子。我们把这些东西放在哪儿呢？
哈里斯先生：放在地板上。放在桌子底下。放在这儿地板上。
琼斯先生：放在碗柜里面。门后面有个碗柜。桌子下，地板上，碗柜里，门后边。
哈里斯夫人：特累西到哪儿去了？
琼斯先生：您的女儿吗，哈里斯夫人？她在楼上。
哈里斯先生：出什么事了？
特累西：我下来啦！哎哟 ……
琼斯先生：喏，这是所新房子嘛……

注5. 当我们指某物并重读 there 时，说：
There is the refrigerator.（那儿是冰箱。）
There are the plates.（那儿是盘子。）
这时 there 是“丰那里”，表示地点。与表示“有”的 there 不同。
注6. 下列介词表示位置：Where is here?

注7. at the back 在……的后部，behind 在……的后面。例：
The kitchen is at the bak of the house.（厨房在这所房子的后部。）
The garden is behind the house.（花园在这所的后面。）
注8. Oh, dear! （啊，哎呀！或哦，天哪！）用来表示焦急、惊奇，有时也说：Dear, dear! 或 Dear me!
注9. There you are. 是口语中用来表示 一种语气，以引起对方注意，意思是：瞧，你瞧！
