How to Use NotificationX for FOMO in WordPress

Love it or hate it, FOMO marketing continues to be one of the top strategies for boosting engagement and keeping users on your site. While there are several ways to implement it in WordPress, the NotificationX plugin is one of the better options.

One way you can utilize this plugin if you are running an eCommerce store is to show sale notifications when a purchase is made. This could help push some customers to purchase if they see that the stock is limited.

A more traditional strategy is to offer users a limited-time offer where they will receive a coupon if they purchase within a specific time frame. Even blogs can take advantage of this by sending out notifications when comments are made.

Today, I will demonstrate how to improve your FOMO marketing strategy by implementing the NotificationX plugin.

This tutorial is for:
WordPress 6.7.2
Plugin: NotificationX v3.0.1

What Is FOMO Marketing?

FOMO or Fear Of Missing Out marketing is a tactic that tries to encourage purchases or interactions with a specific brand by making the user feel like they would be missing out on something if they did not do it.

For example, if you present a user with a time-limited deal such as “For the next 24 hours, you are eligible for free shipping.” Many users may feel like not making a purchase would lose them money because they are passing up free shipping.

In some cases, even if the user has no intention of making a purchase, they will still interact with some campaigns.

For instance, many social accounts will run limited-time campaigns where users need to submit a picture and win a prize. This helps the account grow and boost engagement, and you don’t even need a big prize.

A simple example of this is running a giveaway for all followers. They could win a t-shirt, discount code, and so on by just following you on a specific program. There are numerous examples of these types of campaigns to consider.

At its core, FOMO is about creating urgency and forcing users to act within a small time window in a way that causes them to make a purchase or interact with your brand.

How to Create FOMO with NotificationX

The NotificationX plugin offers sites a variety of ways to introduce FOMO elements onto their website. These include showing recent purchases in real-time, comment notification alerts, adding a notification bar to highlight time-limited deals, and more.

There are also a variety of features locked behind the Pro version, so consider upgrading if any of them catch your fancy. This plugin also integrates with most major plugins in WordPress like MailChimp, WooCommerce, LearnDash, and more.

Perhaps one of the more important elements of this plugin is its compliance with regional laws and regulations such as the GDPR, which means it will inform users about any cookies your site generates.

Overall, the plugin is easy to use but can be a bit intimidating when you first use it.

Step 1: Install NotificationX

Let’s start by clicking on Plugins and selecting the Add New option on the left-hand admin panel.

Add New Plugin

Search for NotificationX in the available search box. This will pull up additional plugins that you may find helpful.

Search for NotificationX

Find the NotificationX plugin, click on the “Install Now” button, and activate the plugin for use.

Install NotificationX

Step 2: Create A New Notification

With the plugin installed, we are ready to begin making new FOMO notifications for your website. Due to the sheer number of choices, I am not going to show them all. Instead, I will focus on creating a Sales Notification.

While the process is nearly identical for most notifications, there are some slight differences. It all depends on the type of notification you decide to build at the start.

To start, click on NotificationX and select the Add New option.

Add New NotifcationX

Here, you will begin by selecting the notification type. You are free to pick any of them, but this tutorial will focus on creating a Sales Notification. Keep in mind you will need additional plugins depending on your selection.

For example, with a sales notification, I will need WooCommerce installed and connected so that it can display when a sale is made.

Sales Notification

Scroll down and select the source of the notification. In my case, it is WooCommerce. Please note that some options are exclusive to the Pro version. You may need to upgrade if the option is locked behind the Pro version.

Choose Notification Source

Click on the “Next” button to continue.

Step 3: Customize the Notification

The next part consists of choosing your notification design. You can choose one for desktop and another for mobile users, but the mobile options are locked behind the Pro version.

Simply pick the notification style you want to use.

Notification Style

The notifications are fine the way they are, but you can toggle the Advanced Design option to pull up more options. This allows you to adjust font size, color, and more about the notification. Click on the “Next” button when you are ready to continue.

Now, it is time to customize the content of the notification. In the case of the Sales Notifications, the template is as follows:

Template Message

Here, you can choose to display the full name of the customer, or just use their first name, which is what I would recommend. Then you can leave the “Just Purchased” text alone, or change it if you desire.

The last two options allow you to choose the product title and how the time is displayed for the purchase. The rest of the options are locked behind the Pro version of the plugin, but they allow you to further customize the message.

You can also set up specific products for this to appear on, but again, this is pro-exclusive. Below this are the link options. With the free version, the only option is to link directly to the product page where that purchase was made.

For example, if someone buys a pair of socks and then the visitor sees and clicks on the socks, they will be brought to that product’s page.

Click on the “Next” button to continue.

These are the display options. You can choose to show the product image in the message, and you can also choose to hide these notifications from appearing in certain areas.

Display Settings

For instance, when someone is in the checkout, you probably don’t want to show notifications that could drag them away from completing the purchase. Click on the “Next” button one more time for the last settings.

Here you can customize random parts of the notification. This includes options for animations, display length, behavior options, and more. Once you have finished customizing everything, click on the Preview option to view it.

Preview NotificationX

You can swap between desktop, mobile, and tablet views. If everything looks good, click on the Publish button and your notification will go live. Congratulations on learning how to create a FOMO notification with NotificationX.

Be Sure to Comply With Laws And Regulations

Marketing efforts are heavily regulated. While the plugin offers support for GDPR compliance, be aware that there are other laws you must comply with. A great example of this would be the CCPA or California Consumer Privacy Act.

Part of this law requires you to disclose what data you are collecting and allow users to opt out of their data from being sold. There are other aspects to it, which you should study. Failure to comply will result in a hefty fine.

For the record, NotificationX does not mention any tools that help with CCPA compliance.

It’s worth mentioning that several plugins in WordPress are dedicated to helping your site comply with these regulations. For example, the Complianz plugin has over one million active installs and helps with GDPR and CCPA compliance.

There are others, so be sure to use one if you need assistance in complying with the laws.

Improve Sales with FOMO Notifications Today

While many users may find FOMO marketing annoying, there is no denying it works. That said, many websites do fall into the trap of going overboard with FOMO which can diminish the returns and even drive some users away.

As such, be mindful that too many notifications can be annoying. Most users do not want to be bombarded with them before they even get a chance to look at what you are selling. However, do it right and there are a lot of benefits to enjoy.

I hope you found this tutorial helpful in learning how to create FOMO notifications with NotificationX.
