Dogs really do look and act just like their owners

People often say that dogs are humans' best friends, but sometimes a person and a dog just don't get along. If a family has to give up a pet, it can be very sad. If the pet is a working dog, like a guide dog, it can also be very expensive. Training a guide dog can cost up to $50,000,but about one third of them are returned because they don't get along with their owners.

To help people and dogs match better, researchers in Germany are trying to find ways to make better dog-owner pairs. Their research has confirmed something many people already think: dogs really do look like their owners. More importantly, dogs and owners often have similar personalities.

Yana Bender, a researcher, says, "We want to know what makes a good match between a person and a dog, and how to find the right dog for each person. First, we need to know if dogs and their owners are usually similar or different."

In a science journal, Ms. Bender and her team looked at many studies and found that the similarities are real. One area is appearance. Many studies show that people can match photos of dogs and their owners better than just guessing. For example, women with short hair often have dogs with short ears, and women with long hair often have dogs with long ears. People who are overweight also tend to have overweight dogs. Some studies even found that people can match dogs and owners just by looking at photos of their eyes.

Dogs and owners can also be similar in personality. Owners who are shy often have nervous dogs. Owners who worry a lot may have more aggressive dogs. People who are careful and organized usually have dogs that are easier to train. People who own "dangerous" dog breeds often rate themselves as liking excitement and sometimes even being more aggressive.

狗狗和主人在性格上也可能相似。性格害羞的主人通常会有容易紧张的狗狗；经常焦虑的主人可能会养更具攻击性的狗狗；细心且有条理的人通常养的狗狗更容易训练；饲养“危险”犬种的人往往自认为喜欢刺激，有时甚至更具攻击性。

Why does this happen? Psychologists have known for a long time that people prefer friends who look and act like them. The same seems to be true for dogs and their owners. For example, women with short hair think short-eared dogs are friendlier and smarter, and women with long hair feel the same about long-eared dogs. (What the dogs think, we don't know yet!)
